Yan was last year appointed as the deputy chief executive officer for the Indian operation, and was looking after telco partners such as Bharti Airtel, BSNL, Reliance Jio besides focusing on government and enterprise customers in the country.

Before joining the India operations, he served ZTE as the chief executive of Myanmar.

A query sent to ZTE went unanswered.

The development comes at a time when the company's two main partners --BSNL and Vodafone Idea -- are going through a tough time in India, which led to payment delays to the vendor.

ZTE, however, received some interim payment of Rs 150 crore from the stressed state-run telco in December. As of mid-December, BSNL owed Rs 1,300 crore to the Chinese vendor.

The vendor was recently allowed by the Indian government to participate in the upcoming 5G field trials. The move was significant since the US has been pressuring its allies and friendly countries, including India, to bar Huawei from 5G deployments, flagging security concerns and citing the company’s alleged proximity to the Chinese government.

Vodafone Idea, Airtel and BSNL had submitted their respective applications with ZTE for trials.

ZTE recently told ET that it was open to set up a cybersecurity lab in India similar to its European labs to address the concerns raised by the industry and public regarding 5G security, besides offering access to its product source code. It had then said that it will actively collaborate with the Indian regulators, telcos and other stakeholders to contribute towards secure telecom networks.

The vendor is also looking at starting local manufacturing for set-top-box (STBs) and customer premises equipment (CPE) devices, along with its radio products in India for domestic as well as export purposes.
