June 5 update below, post originally published June 3.
If you are expecting the normal iPhone service from Apple and the next-generation handsets to be announced in September, then there is good news. The supply chain is gearing up to start manufacturing the iPhone 12 this July.
That would put the presumptively named iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max on course for the traditional early September reveal, but questions remain when a significant volume of handsets will go on public sale. Most Popular In: Consumer Tech

June 5 update: As well as the supply chain reports below, one of Apples suppliers is subtly signalling the delay of the new iPhone. The later start to the smartphone’s production means the bulk of initial sales will move to the fourth calendar quarter. >Mark Gurman and Ian King for Bloomberg:
"Hock Tan, chief executive officer of Broadcom, discussed a “major product cycle delay” at a “large North American mobile phone” customer, during an earnings conference call with analysts on Thursday. Tan often refers to Apple this way. This time, the executive said the delay will mean the bump in wireless revenue experienced by Broadcom will happen one quarter later than usual this year.”
Tan also notes that no other details have changed in terms of design or content, this is simply a significant volume order that is being received later than planned, which changes the timeline of Broadcom’s income over the financial year.
The report comes from the team at Digitimes, noting the production of a 6.1 inch screened iOS smartphone, widely believed to be a larger screened iPhone 12 Max (compared to the 5.7 inch screen on the entry level iPhone 12), or the iPhone 12 Pro (which itself will have a larger screened partner in the shape of the 6.7 inch screen iPhone 12 Pro Max).
Thanks to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, production has clearly been delayed. In previous years production has started in late May/early June. That puts the iPhone 12 proaction between 4 and 6 weeks behind last year’s schedule.
The pandemic is also having a knock-on effect in the world’s economy, which could depress the sales of Apple’s relatively expensive handsets come the last calendar quarter. Curiously this could help Apple out - a reduced supply of handsets will complement the drop in demand for the top-end models.
And this year has a twist. Apple has the mid-range iPhone SE ready to pick up the slack for those on a budget.
If you’re putting bets on which iPhone will be the biggest seller of the year, the SE is looking odds-on.
